Biography

Robert M. O’Hollaren, MD has been a member of Ventura Orthopedics since 1982. Raised in Ventura County and a graduate of Nordhoff High School in Ojai, Calif., Dr. O’Hollaren has a strong commitment to the area. He received his undergraduate degree in zoology with high honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. O’Hollaren attended medical school at the University of Southern California (USC), Keck School of Medicine and earned his medical degree in 1977.

Already showing an avid interest in orthopedics, Dr. O’Hollaren was selected into the orthopedic residency program at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Medical Center. He completed his internship in surgery and a four-year residency program in orthopedic surgery. This included terms as Chief Resident at the Long Beach Veterans Hospital and UCI Medical Center, as well as training in the latest rehabilitation techniques at the Rancho Los Amigos Hospital in Downey, Calif. An early interest in sports medicine was fueled by the emergence of the field of arthroscopic surgery, in which Dr. O’Hollaren performed the earliest types of the new surgical techniques. He also participated in performing the newest procedures for joint replacement surgery of the knee utilizing techniques developed at the UCI Medical Center.

After completion of the residency program, Dr. O’Hollaren returned to Ventura to start practicing and was board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery in 1984. His interest in sports medicine led him to open the first sports medicine clinic in Ventura County at Community Memorial Hospital where he was the director for several years. Appreciating the need for rehabilitation utilizing modern principles of sports medicine, Dr. O’Hollaren helped open the first therapy center developed for athletic rehabilitation in Ventura, the Pacific Orthopedic Sports Therapy Center. In 1982, he was asked to develop an athletic medicine clinic at Ventura College and served as the director of the sports medicine clinic at the college for nearly 30 years. Dr. O’Hollaren was the team physician for the Ventura College athletic program until 2010.

A particular interest in arthroscopic joint surgery has resulted in extensive experience in this area. Dr. O’Hollaren has also had an active interest in reconstructive surgery, including hip and knee replacements, and believes that principles of rehabilitation similar to those used in athletic surgery can be used to maximize function after joint replacement. Currently, Dr. O’Hollaren practices part-time and limits his practice to the evaluation and non-operative treatment of orthopedic conditions.

Dr. O’Hollaren has been an active participant in professional and educational activities in the community and state. He has served as Director of Physical Therapy and Chief of Surgery at Community Memorial Hospital. Since 2006, he has served on the board of directors of the California Orthopedic Association representing nearly 2000 orthopedic surgeons at the state and national level. He served as president of that organization in 2014-15. He is the author of several academic articles and has presented material at national Orthopedic Academy meetings.

Dr. O’Hollaren lives in Ventura with his wife and has two children. His interests include surfing, hiking, fishing and music.
