Navigating Surgery

Surgery Steps

Know what to expect as you approach your surgery date.

Before Your Surgery

Before surgery, our team will obtain prior authorization for the surgery from your insurance company while you complete any necessary pre-operative workup. Once your scheduling team has confirmed a date with you, make sure to follow all pre-operative instructions provided to you by your doctor.

If your surgery has been scheduled and no one from the facility has contacted you prior to your surgery, please call the facility for specific instructions.

If there is a possibility you may be pregnant, please notify your surgeon.

Notify your surgeon before coming to the facility if there is any change in your physical condition, such as a cold or fever.

Preparing for Your Surgery

As you prepare for surgery, follow all instructions provided by your surgeon and consult the guidelines below. Failure to follow these instructions may result in cancellation of your surgery.

Do not drink or eat anything after midnight – not even coffee or water. You may brush your teeth, remembering not to swallow anything. Refrain from the use of mints, chewing gum or cigarettes.

Please do not take any medication after midnight unless instructed by your physician or our office. If you are diabetic or on blood pressure or heart medication, obtain specific instructions from your physician or contact the facility.

It is your responsibility to arrange in advance for a responsible adult to drive you home and remain with you for the first 24 hours after surgery. Taxi or ride-share services are not acceptable. You cannot drive yourself or be left alone.

Please bathe or shower prior to your surgery. Remove all makeup. Do not use lotions or oils after bathing.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing such as sweat suits and easy-to-button shirts or blouses that are big enough to accommodate a large bandage after surgery. Wear comfortable shoes that are easy to take off and put on.

Leave all valuable items at home, including jewelry and cash. Facilities cannot be responsible for damaged or lost property.

Bring all insurance cards and your driver’s license with you to the center. See the section on insurance and billing.

If you wear contact lenses or glasses, bring a case for their safekeeping. Removable dentures and bridgework will need to be stored in containers.

Please arrive one hour before your scheduled procedure unless otherwise instructed.

Children Are Special

At Ventura Orthopedics Surgery Center, we meet the special needs of children by creating a relaxed, comfortable environment. To make children feel more at home we encourage them to bring along a favorite toy or blanket.

We recommend that legal guardians discuss surgery with the child beforehand to help alleviate unnecessary stress. Parents can stay with their child until surgery and may rejoin the child as soon as it is appropriate. We believe it is helpful that one adult drives home while another cares for the child. According to law, guardians are required to provide appropriate car seats if necessary.

The Day of Your Surgery

The day of your surgery, please arrive one hour before your scheduled procedure unless otherwise instructed. Your scheduling team will also advise you of arrival time.

Be prepared to sign a form giving your consent for the operation. If the patient is under 18, a parent or legal guardian must accompany the patient and sign the consent form.

A nurse will prepare you by taking your vitals and giving you a patient gown to change into. Your belongings will be securely stored to be returned after the surgery.

Your family will be asked to wait in the front lobby. The surgeon will speak with your family immediately following surgery.

Ventura Orthopedics Surgery Center

If your surgery is taking place at Ventura Orthopedics Surgery Center (VOSC), a VOSC nurse will provide you with a patient gown, slippers, and a basket to store your clothing in before you are escorted to the preoperative area. Staff will also check your temperature, blood pressure and pulse and ask you to empty your bladder before surgery.

After Your Surgery

Before you leave the facility, you will be given written instructions for your care at home.

Arrange in advance for a responsible adult to pick you up at the facility, drive you home and remain with you for the first 24 hours after surgery. You cannot drive yourself or be left alone.

After you have returned home, be sure to follow your doctor’s orders regarding diet, rest, medication, and activity. It is not unusual to feel a little sleepy, lightheaded, or dizzy for several hours after your operation. Do not sign any important papers or make any significant decisions for at least 24 hours.

If you have any questions or problems after surgery, please contact your care team by calling the appropriate clinic.

Do not drive a car, smoke, drink alcoholic beverages, operate machinery, or cook for 24 hours after surgery.

Ventura Orthopedics Surgery Center

If your surgery is taking place at Ventura Orthopedics Surgery Center (VOSC), VOSC will phone you within a few days after your surgery to see how you are and answer any additional questions you might have.

Surgery Billing

Surgical costs are broken into 3 components: Surgeon fee, Facility fee, and Anesthesiology fee. Ventura Orthopedics collects the surgeon fee, while the facility and anesthesiologist collect and bill their own fees.

Surgeon fees are collected as a deposit during the scheduling process. Surgeon fees are calculated according to the allowable amount based on your insurance coverage / deductible. After surgery we will file your insurance claim for you. You will be billed for any amounts not covered by your insurance. Any overpayment can be held as a credit on your account or refunded. If you have any questions regarding Surgeon fees, please call our billing department at 805.641.6432.

Collection of Facility fees may vary depending on where your procedure is taking place. Please call the surgery center or facility where your surgery/procedure is taking place for more information on facility fees.

Anesthesia fees are based on actual time used and are billed by the anesthesiologist. The facility can provide an estimate to you prior to surgery, but additional charges may be necessary if the time used is greater than the estimated time.

Due to the number of insurance plans, we suggest that you contact your insurance company if you have a specific question regarding your coverage.

It is your right as a patient to request information or have questions answered regarding fees or payment policies. If you have any questions or problems regarding your Ventura Orthopedics bill, please email info@venturaortho.com or call 805.641.6432.

Ventura Orthopedics Surgery Center

Ventura Orthopedics Surgery Center (VOSC) requires payment of any deductible and co-insurance portions on the day of surgery. VOSC uses the base fee to estimate this amount.

Prior to your surgery date you will be notified of your estimated insurance coverage and amount of co-pay due to VOSC.

After surgery VOSC will file your insurance claim for you. Any amounts not covered by your insurance, deductibles or coinsurance will be collected on the day of surgery. VOSC accepts most major credit cards with approval on the date of payment.

If the facility or anesthesia costs are more than anticipated, you will be billed for the difference. Any overpayment will be refunded after 30 days from receipt of the insurance payment. The VOSC bill will not include the services of your surgeon or any lab fees, only facility fees.

If you have any questions or problems regarding your Ventura Orthopedics Surgery Center bill, please email info@tsurgery.com or call 805.232.3800.

Fees for cosmetic procedures will be collected prior to surgery. Cash, cashier’s checks, money orders, and major credit cards will be accepted on the day of surgery.

MRI

overview

Ventura Orthopedics offers MRI services on-site at our Oxnard, Thousand Oaks, and Simi Valley locations. Convenient and practical, our MRI machines feature advanced technology and a relaxing open design that is ideal for taking images of extremities such as shoulders, knees, ankles, wrists, elbows, hands and feet.

Unlike a standard MRI, the open design of our orthopedic MRI enables you to lie partially outside of the magnet and extend only the area being examined. Best of all, our MRIs are read by a team of musculoskeletal specialists and board-certified orthopedic radiologists. These nationally recognized imaging experts bring you deep experience in an array of orthopedic specialties.

X-Ray

overview

Ventura Orthopedics offers on-site digital x-ray services at every location. A quick and simple process, x-rays are a form of radiation (like light or radio waves) that are able to pass through any part of the body that needs to be examined and record an image. Afterward, no radiation remains in the body. Safe and effective for both children and adults, x-rays provide essential insight for evaluation and treatment.

At Ventura Orthopedics, our digital x-rays are read by a team of musculoskeletal specialists and board-certified orthopedic radiologists. These nationally recognized imaging experts bring you deep experience in an array of orthopedic specialties. In addition, the powerful new technology of the modern digital x-ray machine enables our radiologists to direct the x-ray with incredible precision, ensuring that any part of the body not being imaged receives minimal exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Imaging FAQs

Find answers to common questions about our Imaging Services.

What are x-rays used for?

A painless and non-invasive test, digital x-rays are helpful in demonstrating the proper alignment and stabilization of bone fragments after treatment for a fracture. They also serve as an excellent guide to orthopedic surgeries, such as spine repairs and fusions, joint replacements and fracture reductions. In addition, x-rays are essential to the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of conditions, including, but not limited to:

  • Abnormalities
  • Arthritis
  • Degenerative conditions (i.e. osteoporosis)
  • Disease
  • Dislocated joints
  • Fractures
  • Growths and tumors
  • Locating foreign objects in/near bones
  • Injuries
  • Infections

What are MRIs used for?

A painless procedure that does not involve radiation, MRIs use magnetism, radio waves and a computer to produce incredibly detailed images of specific areas of the body. In addition to examining bones, joints and soft tissues, such as cartilage, muscles and tendons, MRIs are useful in revealing important orthopedic insights, including:

  • Congenital abnormalities
  • Degenerative conditions
  • Deterioration from arthritis
  • Disease (i.e. bone marrow/inflammatory)
  • Fractures
  • Herniated discs
  • Injuries
  • Results of surgeries and corrective procedures
  • Structural abnormalities
  • Tumors

How safe is x-ray and MRI imaging?

Digital x‑rays at Ventura Orthopedics are safe, quick, and effective for diagnosing bony and alignment issues. The radiation dose is very low and transient. A single x-ray delivers a very small amount of radiation, often less than what you’d get from a long flight.

MRI is also very safe, with no radiation involved, but thorough pre-screening is critical, especially for patients with metal implants or medical devices.

Conditions like fracture rails, internal electrical stimulators, or cervical fixation may require special evaluation before scanning.

If you have specific implants or devices, or concerns about enclosed-space imaging, share that information with your care team – they will ensure it’s safe for you to undergo MRI.

Can I get an x-ray / MRI at Ventura Orthopedics if I have not seen a Ventura Orthopedics provider yet?

Yes! You can definitely get an X-ray or MRI at Ventura Orthopedics even if you haven’t yet seen one of our providers. As long as you have obtained a referral from an outside physician, our team is ready to help you get the answers you need. Just reach out to your nearest Ventura Orthopedics location, and we’ll walk you through the simple steps to schedule your imaging.
