Biography

Dr. Idowu was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago and grew up in Staten Island, NY. With his father being a psychiatrist and his mother an OR nurse, he was exposed to the medical field at an early age which helped to drive his interest. He attended Washington University in St. Louis on a full scholarship through the Ervin scholarship program and graduated with a degree in Biochemistry. He then matriculated to University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, where he also received a full academic scholarship, to complete his medical degree.

Dr. Idowu completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Los Angeles County/Keck School of Medicine Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program where he not only received excellent training but had his first taste of California living.

He subsequently completed a one-year fellowship in Orthopaedic Spine Surgery at New York University Langone Health in Manhattan, New York. While there, he was trained in the most advanced spinal techniques using robotics, navigation, and endoscopy to treat patients’ ailments. He also completed an AO Global Diploma program while in fellowship that involved education and discussion with spine surgeons across the world.

His clinical expertise includes cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine surgery. He has specialized training in treating degenerative pathology with both traditional techniques such as decompression and fusion but also utilizing motion preserving technology such as disc arthroplasty or laminoplasty when appropriate. His goal for his patients is to focus on the cause of pain and to find a treatment that is both effective and least invasive for the patient. This also includes focusing on non-operative techniques and referrals if appropriate for his patients.

Dr. Idowu has taken part in research throughout his training. He has authored studies that have focused on clinical outcomes after specific orthopedic procedures, but also has investigated trends in surgical team communication and patient understanding of surgical procedures. He feels that research that focuses on the more human aspects of medicine is important for helping to understand the goals of our patients.

In addition to spine surgery, Dr. Idowu provides general orthopedic care to his patients when appropriate.

In his spare time, Dr. Idowu enjoys spending time with his wife, Danah, and his dog Wizkid, trying new restaurants, staying active, and traveling to new countries.
